Chelsea captain John Terry then had the opportunity to win the Champions League but slipped while taking his penalty and struck the post.
The shootout continued until Edwin van der Sar saved Nicolas Anelka’s attempt, securing a 6–5 shootout victory for Manchester United.
For Ronaldo, the triumph represented the first UEFA Champions League title of his career.
His extraordinary season was subsequently recognized with the 2008 Ballon d’Or, the first of what would become five Ballon d’Or awards during his career.
