On May 29, 2021, Manchester City faced Chelsea in the final in Porto.
The evening ended painfully for De Bruyne, who was forced to leave the match following a collision with Antonio Rüdiger. Chelsea ultimately won 1–0 through Kai Havertz’s first-half goal.
Despite the defeat, reaching the final represented another major step in Manchester City’s transformation into one of Europe’s dominant clubs.
De Bruyne’s individual performances were recognized at the end of the campaign when he was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year for the second consecutive season — an exceptional achievement reflecting the respect he commanded among fellow professionals.
The disappointment of 2021 would eventually make his later triumph even more significant.
Two years later, De Bruyne and Manchester City finally captured the Champions League in 2023, completing a historic Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League treble.
