With Kareem Abdul-Jabbar unavailable for Game 6, the 20-year-old rookie famously started at center against the Philadelphia 76ers and produced 42 points, 15 rebounds, and 7 assists to secure the championship. He became the first rookie in NBA history to win Finals MVP.
Magic’s rivalry with Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics helped define an entire era of professional basketball and played a major role in the NBA’s extraordinary growth during the 1980s.
