Michael Cooper established himself as one of the greatest defensive specialists in Los Angeles Lakers history, combining elite perimeter defense, athleticism, intelligence, and reliable shooting.
Cooper joined the Lakers in 1978 and spent his entire 12-year NBA career with the franchise. He became a fundamental part of the legendary Showtime Lakers alongside Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, and other stars.
During his career, Cooper helped the Lakers win five NBA championships in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988. His ability to defend the opposition’s best perimeter players while contributing offensively made him one of the most valuable role players of the Showtime era.
In 1987, Cooper was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first Lakers player to win the award. He was also selected to eight consecutive All-Defensive teams, including five First Team selections.
Cooper’s combination of defensive intensity and three-point shooting made him an early prototype of the modern 3-and-D player. His ability to guard multiple positions while spacing the floor perfectly complemented the Lakers’ fast-paced offensive system.
