When Mike Tyson arrived at Cus D'Amato's gym in Catskill in the early 1980s, he was just a teenager of about fifteen. He already had a reputation as a brawler, but no one really knew what he was capable of in the ring.

To test young Tyson, the trainers decided to organize his first serious sparring session against a more experienced boxer from the gym. The goal was simply to see if he could last a few rounds and learn the basics of fighting.

But from the very first seconds, something unusual happened.

Tyson moved forward without backing down, unleashing a barrage of hooks and uppercuts with surprising aggression and power for a teenager. His opponent, despite being used to sparring, quickly realized that young Tyson hit much harder than expected.

After a few particularly violent exchanges, the trainers decided to stop the session. Several boxers present in the gym later recounted that the entire room stopped to watch, impressed by the speed and power of young Tyson.

At the end of the sparring session, Cus D’Amato reportedly simply told those present:

“This boy will become the world heavyweight champion.”

A few years later, this prediction would come true when Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in history.
