He was even more dominant during the playoffs. In the 2000 NBA Finals against the Indiana Pacers, Shaq averaged 38.0 points and 16.7 rebounds per game, leading Los Angeles to the championship and earning his first NBA Finals MVP award.
He then captured Finals MVP honors again in 2001 and 2002, becoming the only player in NBA history to win the award in three consecutive seasons.
His physical dominance made him almost impossible to defend. Opposing teams routinely had to build their entire defensive strategy around limiting his presence in the paint, creating opportunities for teammates such as Kobe Bryant and the Lakers’ perimeter players.
